The Eastern Interconnection Planning Collaborative (EIPC) is a coalition of stakeholders uniting efforts to "model the impact on the grid of various policy options determined to be of interest by state, provincial and federal policy makers and other stakeholders." They are comprised from over 20 planning authority organizations including PJM, MISO, IESO, NYISO, ISONE, TVA, American Transmission Company, Southern Company, and many others. See http://www.eipconline.com/

In October 2013, The EIPC announced that AURORA client, Levitan & Associates, Inc. was selected to lead the technical analyses for its Gas-Electric System Interface Study. The study, which is being conducted under a grant from the U. S. Department of Energy, has four main objectives: 1) baseline the existing natural gas and electric system infrastructure; 2) evaluate the capability of the natural gas system to meet the needs of the electric system; 3) identify contingencies on the natural gas system that could adversely affect electric system reliability and vice versa; and 4) evaluate the costs/benefits of, and issues associated with generator dual-fuel capability.

The Study was completed in and results published in early 2015, and made significant use of AURORA, particularly in objective/target 2. This phase involved running AURORA to produce expected gas demand under a variety of scenarios. The final reports for all four objectives (or targets), including appendices are located http://www.eipconline.com/gas-electric-documents.html

What our customers say...

"AURORA is easier to use than other models we've seen. The technical support and training provided by EPIS are great. AURORA gives us an extremely powerful tool to use for analyzing a wide variety of utility filings - integrated resource plans, power purchase and sales contracts, PURPA contracts, resource selections in RFPs. AURORA is more user-friendly than other models. Preparing input data is much simpler, in part, due to its ability to link to Excel files. Like all models, it generates a huge amount of output, but AURORA has features that make preparing output reports and graphs simple and quick. Those are important features in order to overcome the 'black box' perception that often is associated with complex models used in commission proceedings..."

"...As a state commission, we don't have the time or the staff to devote someone full-time to maintaining and operating a sophisticated power supply model. AURORA's ease of use, technical support and training give us the capability to review and analyze utility filings whenever they come in. So far, we have used AURORA for IRP analysis, evaluating purchase contracts and sales, establishing prices for purchases from large PURPA projects, and comparing bids for acquiring new resources. I'm certain we'll use it for other applications in the future."
     - Rick Sterling, Utilities Engineer, Idaho Public Utilities Commission

"In Washington, we use Aurora in a production cost modeling role and in a resource planning model role. We value the fact that it comes with a current power market data base and that it interfaces easily with Microsoft Office products. The amount of time we need to devote just to maintain power economics modeling skills is lower as a result. It also allows us to focus on the data which reflects the individual companies we regulate. We find it promising that the model's data base and reporting system allow the user to create sub-portfolios with in a company's portfolio for rate and allocation studies..."
