Ben Thompson

Chief Executive Officer & Board of Managers
Ben joined EPIS in 2003 with several years of experience in software development, market forecasting and analysis in high-tech industries. He worked in Silicon Valley for over 4 years, first as a software engineer developing applications to monitor wireless communication networks. Later as a senior semiconductor industry analyst for Gartner, Ben was responsible for researching emerging markets, developing revenue forecasts, and maintaining a demanding publication and presentation schedule. At EPIS, Ben has held several positions of increasing responsibility, first in sales and marketing, then as a manager over data research, customer support, and later supervising human resources, IT, and administrative functions. He was appointed an officer in 2008. Most recently, Ben led the global sales team to the highest level of new customers in the company's history. Currently, Ben serves as CEO and is responsible for leading EPIS into new strategic markets and managing the Company's rapid expansion. Education: Ben earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Utah, and an M.B.A. from Brigham Young University.


John Scott

Chief Operating Officer
John brings more than 30 years experience in power system analysis, planning and forecasting to the EPIS team. John began his career as a transmission planner at FPL, and served as the chair for the statewide Transmission Planning Task Force for the Florida Electric Coordinating Group (now the FRCC). John then transitioned to FPL's generation production costing, where he became the supervisor accountable for evaluating system enhancement benefits, calculating fuel cost recovery for ratepayers, and developing a cost-effective DSM portfolio for the company. In 1999 he joined the nascent FPL Energy, now NextEra Energy, as the Manager of Fundamental Analysis, helping to grow it into a national leader. His responsibilities included forecasting North American electric prices, providing analytical support for contract negotiations and proffering asset valuations towards investment consideration. After leaving FPL Energy John worked as an independent consultant with engagements for IPP's and capital venture groups. He provided these clients with service for software, analytics and advice to assist in decision making for transmission planning, DSM portfolio decisions, and/or generation asset investments. John's past duties at EPIS include customer support, Manager of Data, and VP of Development. Currently, John serves as COO and leads the Sales Team. John is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Florida and has been certified as an expert witness in the State of New York. Education: John received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and his MBA from the University of Florida.


Deborah Austin-Smith

Customer Relations & Support Lead
Deborah joined EPIS in 2000 with more than 15 years of experience training, supporting and integrating software products and solutions for technology intensive businesses. During her tenure, Deborah has held several management positions within the company, starting as the office manager and then as lead for the customer support and data teams. She later served as Vice President of sales and marketing during a period of growth, when EPIS expanded their model and data offering to the European market. Deborah currently heads the world class customer support and retention team. This team of talented professionals is responsible for delivering excellence in technical support and service to all our customers. Education: Deborah earned a B.A. in English from the University of California at Berkeley.


Morgan Dennis

Vice President of Development
Morgan has been with EPIS since 2009 and has worked in market intelligence, customer support, and model development. Morgan has performed numerous on-site customer trainings across our client base, having travelled as far as the Middle East. Specializing in the mathematical formulation of optimization problems, Morgan has been heavily involved in the development of AURORA's LP dispatch, portfolio optimization and commitment algorithms. Education: Morgan graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Mathematics from Brigham Young University and has a master's degree in Applied and Computational Mathematics from Johns Hopkins University.


Bryan Mills

Market Research & Analysis Lead
Bryan joined EPIS in 2000 where he started as a customer support account manager and was also responsible for the AURORAForecast, a monthly western rolling forecast. In 2006 Bryan worked at a foreign exchange trading firm before returning to the power industry at PSEG as a Sr. Market Analyst in the Power Finance group. During his 5 years at PSEG, Bryan was responsible for a variety of duties including load forecasting, capacity price forecasting, asset investment decisions including new builds/retrofits/retirements, and portfolio scenario analysis. Bryan has significant experience using multiple models under various platforms during his 13 years of experience in the power industry. Bryan returned to EPIS in 2013 as Manager of Integration Services, but quickly moved into his current role as Market Research & Analysis Lead. Education: Bryan graduated from Oregon State University with a B.S. in Management Information Systems.


Jonell Anderson

Quality Assurance Lead
Jonell joined EPIS in 2005 when looking to put down some roots after being a business manager advisor for health clinics in the Peace Corps. At EPIS she started out as the Office Manager, but Jonell's attention to detail and research abilities were quickly capitalized for energy market analysis. In addition to her role as Data Analyst, she has also been responsible for technical writing, user assistance content, and technical support to customers. Her current role as Quality Assurance Lead oversees all aspects the user experience (UX/UI) and process improvement, ensuring a high quality product for our clients. Education: Jonell graduated with a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Washington.


M. Farooq Ali Khan

Nodal Solutions Manager
Farooq joined EPIS in 2010 and has worked in market research and analysis, customer support and as a technical expert for the sales team. Farooq began working with EPIS as an intern, and immediately took immense interest in developing and improving upon the nodal cases for different ISOs and RTOs. This work included building our CAISO nodal project, and developing scripts and other automation for the various nodal cases. As the Nodal Solutions Manager, Farooq now helms all of EPIS' nodal updates, supporting and interfacing with current and prospective nodal clients. Education: Farooq earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in Power Systems at Washington State University.


Michael Carter

Chief Revenue Officer
Michael Carter brings decades of experience in the energy industry to his role as Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) for EPIS LLC. Before joining EPIS, Michael was head of SNL Energy from 2009 through the sale of SNL Financial and the initial transition to S&P Global in 2015. During that time Michael was successful in growing SNL Energy from a staff of 65 to over 180 employees and increasing revenues over 300%, expanding SNL Energy to one of the largest energy information companies in North America. SNL Financial was acquired by The McGraw-Hill Companies in 2015 for $2.225 billion.

Prior to this Michael was Director of the Energy Valuation practice at Duff and Phelps, and he was Senior Director of product and business development for Platts, a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies and prior to this held positions in the mining industry including Chief Geologist.

Michael is responsible for all revenue generation processes at EPIS, with primary focus on driving increased sales revenues. In addition, his responsibility includes developing the integration and alignment between all revenue-related functions, including marketing, sales, customer support, pricing, and revenue management.

Michael is an experienced senior business leader with a strong background in building size, scale, revenues and significant (45% to 55%+) margins for businesses in the energy and natural resources industries. Michael has deep expertise in data and information analysis, and analytic tools development in complex market-based industries. Michael enjoys business development and competitive & strategic analysis and is respected as an innovative business leader, designer and implementer of SaaS and business solutions. He has a Dip Applied Science from the Canberra TAFE and a BSc from the Australian National University and a MSc from the Colorado School of Mines. He lives in Boulder Colorado with his wife and 3 children.
